Wine and Chocolate Pairing

Valentine’s Day is upon us and however you feel about it, at Old Silo Winery we are sure about one thing: wine and chocolate are a match made in heaven. To help you along the path of perfect pairing, here’s a how-to for picking wine for your chocolate or chocolate for your wine!

It helps if you start by knowing what you like! Dark chocolate or milk chocolate? Do you like add-ins like almonds or peanut butter? Once you know what chocolate you’re working with, you can pick a wine that complements it.

Here’s how to do it:

Full Body Reds with Dark Chocolate

Full body reds can overpower a chocolate with all the flavor they bring to the table, so you need a strong chocolate flavor that can go head-to-head with it. Go for high-cocoa chocolates or even desserts with espresso in them. Try it with our Desperado.

Lighter Reds and Lighter Chocolate

Reds that are a little on the light-body side call for textures that are light and airy too! Try that chocolate cake here, or go for a mousse or milk chocolate truffle. We suggest Cherri Noir or Blackberry Merlot.

Rosé with Chocolate Covered Strawberries

The chocolate and strawberry combo is the best of both worlds when it comes to acidic and sweet. Paired with a mellow Rosé or our Strawberry Fields, you’ll bring out some delicious flavors.

White Wines and White Chocolates

Enjoy white chocolate everything when you’ve got a white wine. The smooth buttery textures of each are an incredible match and you won’t be overwhelmed by white chocolate’s sweetness. The zip of a white wine like our Farmhouse balances it out.

Riesling and Chili-Chocolate

Believe it or not, this is wine calls out for a wild pairing — we’re talking spicy. Make this your adventurous combo and grab a chili-infused dessert to go with Old Silo Riesling.

Berries and Peanut Butter

Peanut butter has met its match in fruity berry wines like our Raspberry Zinfandel or Blackberry Fruit Wine. This pairing works because you’ve got the salty-sweetness of peanut butter complemented by the tangy-sweetness of berries. It’s not quite peanut butter and jelly, but there’s a reason that combo works so well.
