Spiced Wine for Cold Weather

Baby, it's COLD outside! This weather has us sipping on hot mulled wine! It’s so easy to make:

Ingredients

1 bottle of Red Wine (Try Old Silo Chambourcin )

1 large orange

1–2 Tbsp maple syrup or sugar

5 whole cinnamon sticks

6 whole cloves

3 star anise

Brandy to taste

Slice the oranges and put into a heavy-bottomed pot. Then pour in the bottle of wine and optional brandy. Finally add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise. Sweeten to taste. Warm on medium heat — 5 minutes should do it — then serve in a mug and enjoy!

Delicious Chicken Dinner — Just Add Wine!

January is the perfect month to try new things — alongside those New Year Resolutions. For us, it is bringing some new flavors to the dinner table by cooking with wine! Sunday we made Chicken Piccata using our Farmhouse Sauvignon Blanc. This dish was a delicious and easy-to-make dinner!

We used this recipe (https://www.jocooks.com/recipes/lemon-chicken-piccata/) as our base.

Our tips:

Before flouring, pound out the chicken to 1/2 inch thickness, then cut into pieces smaller than your hand. Much easier to handle that way.

Go easy on the lemon juice so it does not overpower the wine. Try 3 Tablespoons of lemon juice and increase the wine to 2/3 cup.

We arranged our Chicken Piccata on a bed of al dente linguine tossed with olive oil and garlic, but if you go low carb, just add your favorite veggies for a tasty dinner!

And of course, serve with a chilled glass of Old Silo Farmhouse!

Buon Appetito!

A few COVID-19 reminders.

Please do not visit our winery if you are coughing, have any kind of congestion or are feverish. Maintain social distances and use hand sanitizer.

No personal items are allowed on the bar, especially your mask and tissues.

Perfume is discouraged, as it may cause others to sneeze and diminish our sense of smell.

We appreciate everyone's vigilance on this!

Hope to see you soon!

Wine and Chocolate Pairing

Valentine’s Day is upon us and however you feel about it, at Old Silo Winery we are sure about one thing: wine and chocolate are a match made in heaven. To help you along the path of perfect pairing, here’s a how-to for picking wine for your chocolate or chocolate for your wine!

It helps if you start by knowing what you like! Dark chocolate or milk chocolate? Do you like add-ins like almonds or peanut butter? Once you know what chocolate you’re working with, you can pick a wine that complements it.

Here’s how to do it:

Full Body Reds with Dark Chocolate

Full body reds can overpower a chocolate with all the flavor they bring to the table, so you need a strong chocolate flavor that can go head-to-head with it. Go for high-cocoa chocolates or even desserts with espresso in them. Try it with our Desperado.

Lighter Reds and Lighter Chocolate

Reds that are a little on the light-body side call for textures that are light and airy too! Try that chocolate cake here, or go for a mousse or milk chocolate truffle. We suggest Cherri Noir or Blackberry Merlot.

Rosé with Chocolate Covered Strawberries

The chocolate and strawberry combo is the best of both worlds when it comes to acidic and sweet. Paired with a mellow Rosé or our Strawberry Fields, you’ll bring out some delicious flavors.

White Wines and White Chocolates

Enjoy white chocolate everything when you’ve got a white wine. The smooth buttery textures of each are an incredible match and you won’t be overwhelmed by white chocolate’s sweetness. The zip of a white wine like our Farmhouse balances it out.

Riesling and Chili-Chocolate

Believe it or not, this is wine calls out for a wild pairing — we’re talking spicy. Make this your adventurous combo and grab a chili-infused dessert to go with Old Silo Riesling.

Berries and Peanut Butter

Peanut butter has met its match in fruity berry wines like our Raspberry Zinfandel or Blackberry Fruit Wine. This pairing works because you’ve got the salty-sweetness of peanut butter complemented by the tangy-sweetness of berries. It’s not quite peanut butter and jelly, but there’s a reason that combo works so well.
